Figure 19 Large group photo, November 1938

A glass negative captioned: Commune of Political Exiles of Anafi, 5 November 1938, omadha simviosis politikon eksoriston Anafis 5–11–1938 (KK8) shows a large group of exiles, over one hundred people, arranged in about nine rows. Most of the group are men, the majority of them young, but a few have white hair. Three women are on the right in the front row, and another in the row next to the back, to the left, identifiable by a dark inverted triangle on the front of her dress. Further to the right from her, a man is holding a little girl on his right arm; she is wearing a white pinafore and has a white bow in her hair. On the left edge of the group are three men in overalls with white cloths or caps (possibly cooks or bakers). The face of another child is visible just to the right of the foremost of the three men in white caps, next to a man in a dark hat. Even more intriguing, the top of a dog’s head can be seen in the fourth row from the back, in the row where a man in a white cap is on the right. Prompted by this photo, one of my informants remembered the dog’s name as ‘Dolfus’ (presumably named after Adolf Hitler), who used to entertain them with ‘singing’ at the end of their evening meal. He also barked to warn them when the police were approaching, giving them time to hide anything they feared might be confiscated. This dog appears in a number of other photographs. In the front row, just to the left of centre, is a man in a cap and white shirt, leaning on his left elbow. Just above his head, in the row behind, a man is holding a white cat with black markings. This is probably ‘Ciano’, named after the Italian Foreign Minister who was Mussolini’s brother-in-law.
